BLOCK 11: Electrochemistry

Electrochemistry

Introduction:  Do you go into a state of mini-panic when your cellphone shows only 3% charge on the battery.

Seeing that number you likely grab the nearest charger and start reversing the reduction-oxidation reaction that is giving your device the electrical power to keep operating.

The word electrochemistry almost defines itself... electro, meaning the production of electricity and chemistry, meaning producing that electricity by chemical means.

Watch each of the following videos and write a summary of each one.

LESSON 1: Electrochemical Cells

Batteries exist in many shapes, forms and sizes, but they all depend on similar chemical reactions. The following video shows the basic chemistry followed by all batteries.

LESSON 2: Half-cells and cell potentials

LESSON 3: Electrolytic Cells

LESSON 4: Vocabulary

After finishing the videos you should create a list of definitions of the following terms.

anode
cathode
battery

electrochemical cell
electrolysis
half-cell

fuel cell
voltaic cell
cell potential

LESSON 5: Learning Check
